Luna is Lehu's sister's dog (Gracie's cousin), she's about 7 or 8 months old and is a St. Charles Cavalier/Brittany Mix. She's absolutely adorable and VERY much a puppy. She is like Gracie's mini-me and Gracie is less than amused by this. They have been playing together really nicely, but Gracie gets tired pretty easily...Luna has no stop button.

Georgie is also not particularly thrilled with this dog's curiosity, but he isn't giving up his spots in the house. She is fascinated by the cat, I don't know if she's ever seen one before.

We have snow today, and it keeps on coming. Yesterday, I made bread. Mmm.

She's a very sweet little pup and she is with us until New Year's Eve, when Teddy (my sister) comes to visit!

Hanukkah Comes Early

Gracie has been a lovely nurse this week. I have been home every day and will stay home tomorrow too. Since I work with people who have compromised immune systems there is really no sense in going in and sharing all my germs.

The sad thing is that I have not felt like knitting at all. Until today, when I decided I would open the box from Knit Picks that was sent to me via my mom (who lives in Guam). I was going to wait until Friday night, but I just couldn't wait any longer. Can I just say I love Knit Picks and their amazing new Wish List! Yippee!!

The loot is so extensive it is almost embarassing. Suffice it to say that I have no need to go yarn shopping in the very near future. I should get my act together and put it all on Ravelry, but I haven't yet. Maybe tomorrow if I don't doze off all day like I did today. Got to love bronchitis.

I got the Carmen Banana Kit to go with my Mr. Foster. He is finished except for his tail. I made his robe, probably too big because I ran out of yarn (oops), still need to make his red pj's. Also got the Hugo Cap Kit. So excited about that one!!!

I appreciate all of your get well wishes, I would love that!

A Knitter's Challenge

I was reading forum posts on Ravelry a few weeks ago and saw, in the Windy City Fiber Folks thread, a post entitled: TRADE OFFER: Knit for Handspun or ...

The post said she had the second of her pair of mits as well as the second sock to complete. Feeling rather confident in my knitting skills (!!), I was curious. I pm'd her. I also, by the way, looked at her gorgeous handspun and my curiosity grew. I am not really interested in spinning. I love that many of you are, but me? I'm really happy knitting and designing.

Well, last Sunday we met in person. Mind you, I still had not asked much about the patterns, I just figured I'd figure them out. And, my dear friend Sarah said, yes, of course you can figure it out no matter what it is. I wasn't worried.

So, I'm excited to say that I'm about to start the toe on the first top down sock I've ever made in my entire knitting life and I actually like the pattern a lot. I might actually try a top down sock, people, how amazing is that? I've been really interested in trying one of Cookie A's patterns, or Grumperina's Jaywalkers, or ... Thank you SpinSpanSpun for opening up my knitting world.

I should say that this woman is a lovely human being as well.

I'm likely to finish this sock today, then I'll weave in the tails...and get going on the mit! Huzzah! Another new pattern. So exciting.

Inspiration

I am - like many of you I'm sure - starting to get many many many catalogs in the mail. Yesterday Talbot's came. I did not know that Talbot's carries "plus" sizes (I'm steady in the 1x/small 2x range). I saw this sweater (photo is from their online catalog).

Now you may or may not recall the February Lady I attempted to make for a friend from Jaeger Roma...it was nearly done and it was just slightly too big for her. I ripped it out that day and haven't touched it since because my feelings were so hurt...I think I was feeling very sensitive that day. Crap, I have a lot of those days but that's another blog altogether.

So...I vowed I'd make something else entirely. And, this Talbot's one is made from exactly the same fiber combo as my Jaeger Roma. The color I have is a sage green and it is lovely to work with.

My plan is to copy the design/shape of this and see how it turns out. Good news to those of you who might be waiting for patterns from me...I have some time off the next two weeks (starting Friday, YEAH!) so that's on my list.

Reunion with my Dear Friend

Giftie. Yay!

So, you all know what kind of a clown this dog Gracie can be...listen to this...

Sarah was coming over and we were going to head to brunch at The Alps - a diner very near to our house that just re-opened after MANY years.

I went for a walk about 25 min before Sarah was to arrive, and ended up stopping at a neighbor's house (I was walking to her house to pick something up from her) and chatting a little longer than expected. I was still at the neighbor's house when Sarah called to say she was sitting on my front porch -- oops! I apologized and said I'd be there in 10 min.

Then I called Lehu to let her know, and Gracie went out to the front porch, grabbed the giftie that was wrapped in gorgous golden fabric, and ran...I hear all of the hubub on the telephone. It was so funny.

In the pretty wrapping (re-usable LOVE IT) was a great canvas tote, perfect for knitting projects, and a really cute purple-decorated tape measure. NOTHING that Gracie might be even remotely interested in.

Hope you had a great day. The weather here was aMAzing today.

Socks made from Berrocco Comfort Socks (I love this yarn). I did a row 1: k2 k1 then row 2: k2 p1 rib to get a different effect. I used size 1 circular needles (2), toe-up with Wendy's underfoot gusset (which I LOVE).

The Cat with her Own Room

Have I told you all about our experiences of having Miss Ruthie groomed -- actually shaved into a lion cut? We did this about 6 months ago. The old girl is losing her teeth and does not do a great deal of grooming (really not much grooming at all), and she is the long-haired feline in the house.

Yeah, so, when the groomer said "the other cats might treat her as a new cat" I disregarded it since Ruthie is the outcast cat in the pecking order around here. Ruthie and Gracie do fine, but the other cats notsomuch. I just figured it would be all normal. I was wrong.

For the first two months we did this Ruthie and her personal litter pan live in our room and the bathroom. Sleep was not to be had because Ruthie purrs REALLY loudly and she likes to wedge herself between my chin and my shoulder (when I'm on my side) or on my chest under my chin when I'm on my back. She didn't once go and play with the other two under the door. No interest at all whatsoever. Harumph.

Then we tried various other things, re-introducing techniques galore. Nada I tell you NA-DA. These cats were having none of that.

We have a room in the basement that has shelves and a rocking chair and other kitty paraphernalia. We moved Ruthie down there and she is happy as a clam. We see her more now because she used to just hide most of the time. I visit her a couple of times every day. We sit together on the rocking chair and she looks up at me with her toothless face and all's well in the world.

I know it seems so sad, but really it has been the best solution. Even when we leave the door open to the room, she doesn't leave it. She just looks up at us as if to say, "are you kidding, in here I'm the queen and out there Georgie is going to jump me."

Yesterday, Lehu and I drove out to the country to go to an apple orchard. I chose a place that had a petting zoo...well it wasn't so much a petting zoo as it was a few animals who were more interested in the food than affection...except for the llama.

I think that the Urban Zoo should go to the country. I want llamas and goats and sheep.

One of my dearest friends turns 30 tomorrow. Last night, his partner's family threw a lovely party for him. I, of course, provided the socks.

The yarn: Austermann Step with Aloe Vera and Jojoba Oil. Colors: navy blue, grey, sea green and cream. NICE to work with, quick knit. I did a cables and seed stitch kind of a deal.

He took this pic from his phone and emailed it this morning. I have a list growing of very appreciative hand-knit object recipients. I am happy.

A Day Late and A Daddy Short

My dad would have been 68 yesterday (September 15th). I wound up with something of a low-grade migraine all day yesterday which wasn't surprising since I'm so darn sensitive to anniversaries and remembering significant dates.

This photo is from 1976 or 1977. The dog is Gulliver, he was a little love. Gracie does this same thing ... sitting on a lap as though she might be actually a lap dog or something.

Gulliver was much more red than Gracie is, he was a great pal to me as a kid. He was a great listener (ha ha).

I hate to be so down, but seems like that's just par for the course. Some days are good, some aren't. I'm overall doing well, just in tune with some of the lost-ness I feel without my dad.

Where did the summer go?

I'll tell you where...I've been busy having fun! I've been knitting, visiting friends, EXERCISING (I know, right?!), and working less. Life is improving. Lehu and I are cleaning today, good times, but the result will be worth it for sure.

Knitting Updates

I've completed threeish pairs of socks!! Now, don't get weird on me...two of these pairs are from like March or something. I did the finishing work on those two. The other pair, however, I did make this summer. Pictures to follow since I gave them away before taking a photo (bad blogger, I know).

Purple stripey socks (bottom of the linked post) are done and ready for the recipient's birthday in October (!!!)
Chicago Cubs Socks (for me) (top of the linked post) from Lorna's Laces Cubby Bear. I love this stuff.

The ones I started in April will go to Sarah who has renamed her blog -- I love it! She and I are both recognizing the joys of destashing. We are not always successful, but we are in process of destashing. Check out all the crafty stuff she does, I impressed.
I did actually make a pair of socks from the tofutsies...they are not done yet so they don't count. I think I'd originally planned these for Sarah, but since she LOVED the other ones so much I thought those would be a better fit (ha ha, get it? fit...I crack myself up).

I've started the pair that I showed yesterday. They are from Austermann Steppe with aloe. They have grey, navy blue and cream and I just love this yarn. LOVE IT! I'm doing cables in sets of three with a longer bit in between. You can probably see them in the pic from yesterday. I'll put up more later.

I have still never knit a pair of socks from the top down. I am a toe-up fan. I have recently discovered WendyKnit's Toe-Up Socks with Gusset on the Bottom of the Foot (you have to scroll down to the pattern (it's free), which I love very very much. I think that I almost have that technique memorized now. I've integrated it in with Judy's Magic cast on and adding my own patterns and designs. So fun!!! I loved Wendy's patterns so much that I recently got her book, which is fantabulous.

I miss you all, sorry to have been gone so long. With fall coming (and my self-imposed time-limits on Facebook), I imagine there will be more indoor time.

I had such a great time in Philadelphia. Although I was there for a family wedding, I think the highlight was meeting the self-proclaimed Country Mouse, BritKnitter! I am so appreciative of her gutziness and steadfast determination to come into Philadelphia from BritKnitterville to meet little old me. I know, I'm not really all that little. Nevermind that.

We met on what turned out to be a very pretty, sunny, but grossly muggy day at a neat little shop called Rosie's Yarn Cellar. The staff was friendly (and searching Ravelry while we were there). We each chose a souvenier and got the heck out of there because if it was muggy outside, inside it was like a slow broiling sauna. Blech.

We chatted like old friends and new friends all at once. I enjoyed meeting BritKnitter so much, though I felt we had already known each other for a long time too. I love the blogosphere.

BritKnitter got some Noro, very exciting indeed. The yarn I got is so soft, I want to carry it with me everywhere. I won't though.

Gracie "Happy Wagger" by ahj

Well. those who had been hoping for summer weather in Chicago have been granted their wish. I prefer the transitional seasons. Spring and Fall. Mild temperatures, no windchill or heat indices. But, four seasons are nice for variation.

And, despite this heat, I have signed myself up for some more motivation...a 5K on July 19th. It is a Women Only event. So, I'm going to do this. Even if I have to walk part of it.

I've been doing strength training for two weeks now and feel a little different already. No, not just the muscle aches ha ha.

Off to take a walk/run in the sweltering heat. I will leave Miss Gracie at home for this one, I think it's too hot for her.

Peony with Raindrops June 2009

Well, my friends. I have not been blogging as frequently as I once did. This is not because I have been working too much (which easily could have been the issue in the recent past), or because I don't think of you all out there in cyberblogville heights.

It is because I have actually been exercising. Okay, it's out. I've been walking most days about 1 mile and a half, with Miss Gracie. I am afraid that she is going to learn that the words Daily Constitutional mean the same thing as W-A-L-K but so far she hasn't figured this out.

We just met a little girl 1 1/2 years old who was fascinated by Gracie...and Gracie was so hyper that I was holding her back. I think that 2 1/2 or 3 is the size of kid that is perfect for Gracie. She just sits and lets them pet her, pull her ears, whatever...but timid little ones who are lower than eye level seem to get the crazy golden retriever act. The girl's mom was very sweet about the whole thing. Although, there is a big exception...that is Miss Birdie. She is not timid with the doggies, or much else which makes her a-ok in my book (even if she was, she'd still be a-ok because I really love her mom and dad and any product of those two HAS to be stellar).

Anyway, on our walk today (we've been walking at least thrice a week (tee hee hee, thrice) for 3 months now. Today was the first day that we ran even a little bit and it didn't nearly kill me. My goal is ... to run a 5K on October 3rd. I had originally thought I'd do one on May 30th but that was just plain nutty. So, instead, I have signed up for the AIDS Run/Walk for October 3rd.

This will be my first 5K, and I'm not sure if it will be my last. But, I do not want this to distract from my Alzheimer's fund raising. That walk is September 19th. I don't think I am going because Teddy (sister) and the Blondinas (neices) are coming to town that weekend. But I am setting up a fundraising page. I just have to find the purple bandanna that Gracie won last year for being the dog who raised the most money for the Kalamazoo Alzheimer's Memory Walk. Huzzah!

I think this one is my favorite one (above). This is one of the parents of the baby bird below.

Mmm ... worms for breakfast.

The robin keeps coming back. Last weekend, I was digging up some roots of a - shall we say - "rather busy" plant that was not-so gradually taking up the beds that get the best sun.

I put an ad on Craig's list and a lady came over and got the plants (for free) for her yard which is MUCH larger than mine. Everyone wins.

Anyway, the robin came back ... and stole, err, I mean ate some worms. This bird doesn't seem all that afraid when I get near with the camera. It makes it fun. It feels like I am the Robin paparazzi, ha ha.

I was looking at some old pictures and I have Robin pictures for the past three years or so. I really do love springtime!

Summer Sundays

The Wild Life in the Big City

This baby bird and its family seems to be living under our back porch. These birds seem to have a death wish, what with the Golden Retriever aka hunting is instinct and the cats hunting and killing is instinct...I have some better pics of the little guy which I will post another time. In this one he looks a little like an owlet. So peculiar.

Either way, this little guy has been perching on the back porch about 4 feet from the back door we use to let Gracie out in the yard. It does not fly well at this point and is acting a bit stubborn if you ask me. Sort of like the teenager out after curfew.

So, with all the bird drama...I've been letting Gracie out the front on the leash which I hate so much at night time.

Any suggestions? I don't want to disrupt this family, but they are in such danger! I am very glad that it isn't an opossum.

My sister "Teddy" and my nieces #1 and #2 sent flowers...a card that plays "Over the Rainbow" ... with drawings! Fred and Ginger, and Tap Shoes sent a lovely card. I am a lucky gal! and my bday isn't til tomorrow! Birdie's Mama and Papa gave me a very generous gift of cash (one dollar for each year...getting older does have some perks, ha ha), and a drawing from Birdie.

My dear readers, I would like to dedicate this entry to my mom, my sister and my friends who are also moms (Birdie's Mama, you know who you are).

My dad took this photo in 1971. It is one of my favorite photographs because my mom and I both really like elephants, and we are looking at a Mama and a baby elephant. Mom's pregnant with my little sister in this picture too, which makes it all the more special to me. Those last moments of being the only child.

In recent years, we have begun a tradition of going to garden centers on Mother's Day. Every year I add a shrub to my yard, and each one is now thriving. We have, in past, have some very intense car rides to these places and some not that big of a deal. I think that's just part of our dynamic. Today, we are going to be trying a new place which is always a bit of an adventure. I tend toward the familiar with this type of thing but that's alright.

Ruthie is really diggin' her new summer 'do, but Georgie thinks we've brought an alien into the house. The saga of the felines in the Urban Zoo continues...

We have continued the "New Cat Entering the Household" protocol. Ruthie is happy as a clam, not really all that interested in going to the door where paws can play. But Georgie and Idgie sit in front of that door most of their waking hours. Yesterday, the cat formerly known as Mellow Georgie, hissed and growled and his tail puffed up like a feather duster when he saw Ruthie as I exited the bedroom/bathroom where she has been living. This made me also want to growl, but part of the protocol is to act normally toward all the animals. No one is special/everyone is special.

Oye gevalt is all I'm saying.

But this morning, Ruthie ventured out of her rooms. The other cats are in the basement where they live at night time (there are lots of fun and comfy spots for them down there...plus food, water and litter boxes). She is now exploring the living room. Once upon a time, there were three cats. One, who is usually very very mellow and does not get upset easily (Georgie), one, who adapts to change very very poorly (Idgie), and one who keeps to herself (Ruthie).

Gracie - you probably know her...she's the Golden I can't stop talking about.

Back to our story, already in progress. Georgie spent most of the day yesterday sitting on the front enclosed porch enjoying the sunshine and supervising the workers.

Urban Zoo Knitter (UZK) gathered up Ruthie at 12:30 pm and got her in the carrier with not much ado -- getting pretty good at this task. Didn't get ANY scratches at all. And, there was only one hiss involved (from the cat).

In case you forgot what our Diva looks like with her tresses...very glam.

This time of year, however, the glam becomes matty and kind of impossible to maintain (mane-tain...ha ha ha). So, we generally take her to a cats only groomer who refuses to do lion cuts because she thinks they are cruel. She might be right. But stay with me here...because I'm not convinced.

I have friends who run a no-kill cat shelter and one of their cats gets a lion cut for the summer too, so I didn't feel terrible about subjecting Ruthie to this process. And, she's been to the other groomer so much that she's really actually well behaved at the groomers now.

As I dropped her off at this place called the Bark Bark club (dogs, clearly, get more services than cats...what with day care and all of that)... their review on yelp talked about how great the cat groomer is. They were right, but I'll get to that.

I dropped her off at 1. Because that is the time I wrote in my calendar. When I was filling out the paperwork, they said they would probably start her at 3 and she'd be done by 5, but since they close at 5 could I get there earlier. I shrugged my shoulders and thought, why didn't I drop her off later? I felt so bad that she'd have to be in the carrier for all that time. Poor little Miss Ruthie. But, I left her feeling hopeful that it would be alright.

So, I went on my way to do errands and visit with a friend. At 4:30 they called and said, "your kitty will be ready at 5, could you be here a little before that since we close at 5?" I was perplexed. Why not just say she'd be ready at 4:45? But, whatever. I got there and she was just about ready. I paid the nice people, and the groomer came out with Ruthie in her carrier (it's a nice one, like a duffel bag with mesh sides so she can see out ... and breathe).

"Was she okay?" I asked reluctantly.
"Yes, she was perfect...she would just lie down and let us work on her."
"Really?! Oh, that's good. Thanks." Inside I was feeling horrible. I was scared that this cat would hate me forever and ever. And, I'm her favorite mama so that was not a fun thought AT ALL.
"Do you have other cats at home? Because they will sometimes treat cats who come home with a lion cut as outsiders...so I want you to be ready for that." No biggie, I thought, they always treat her as an outsider.

I was unprepared for what happened next.

Every cat changed roles.

Georgie became a freaked out howling hissing growling maniac
Idgie was indifferent
Ruthie was sweet and playful

We have instituted the "introducing a new cat to your household" protocol. I expect that this will last a week.

But, last night, Ruthie just started to love her new style. She's carefree and cuddly...she loves to be touched (this is unusual) and she's letting me pick her up more.

Part of the Big Gay Month of May Extending into the Prideful Month of June 40th Birthday Extravaganza will be going to see the Indigo Girls at Ravinia. Lehu will join me this year, and we will be sitting in the pavilion...so civilized.

Two years ago I went with a group of friends and we had a picnic, we knit, we talked, it was good. It was a gorgeous night...and it was right after the cicadas so there were LOTS of dead cicadas all over the place. Exciting.

Brandi Carlile will open up for the Indigo Girls again! Love her.

Here are my seven things:

I have recently learned that I, along with quite a large percentage of the population, have a Vitamin D deficiency. I am taking mega doses (prescription, who knew) of D, and supplementing. The sun is starting to come out so that will help too.
I am starting to come to terms with turning 40 next month.
I really like country music.
I have some friends that I think of as family (Birdie's Mama, you know who you are).
In my job, I hear stories of how people to awful things to other people but I also get to witness the transformation that occurs when people start to reclaim their own personal power. It's a beautiful thing.
I am considering taking Ruthie for a lion cut (is that awful?).
I like to play "catch me" with Gracie. It's hilarious.

There's a New Knitter in the Family

Today, my friends, is my eldest niece's 6th birthday. And, for her birthday, Bubbie gave her knitting needles and yarn. And, a lesson! Bubbie emailed Auntie to say "she's knitting."

She did a little bit and then lost interest.

When I talked with her about it, I told her it was hard at first but then it gets really fun.

She said, "yeah."

Huzzah! It has begun.

Yesterday morning I woke up to the feeling of the house shaking from below. It was not a natural phenomenon, no, it was the work that the city is doing on our street. Or, more accurately, under our street.

They are "upgrading the sewer infrastructure" which is generally a good thing. Much needed. But there are a few inconveniences. Some that we have not yet experienced as well, I am certain.

Loud banging house-shaking sounds and such, beginning at 7:30 am.
Water turned off for several hours a few days.
They hit a gas line yesterday and the gas company knocked on the door to cut off our service until it was repaired. They came back at 5:30 (thank goodness I was home) to restore the power, which included their coming inside to re-light the pilot lights on the water heater, furnace and stove. I could have done that, I told them, and they said, "ma'am, it's company policy." Did you also know that it is People's Gas company policy that gas company employees can not have any contact with clients' dogs? It makes sense, I know, but how sad that some people's dogs have ruined a fun visit for Gracie who thinks that everyone who comes to our house is coming to see her and only her. But I digress...
Street is closed. I have to go a different way to leave my house.

All of this said, I am really glad they are doing the work. We really really needed this upgrade in our area.

Miss Gracie loves her bear. I think recently on Ravelry there was a discussion on the Golden Lovers group about if your dog likes stuffed animals. Well, I'm here to tell ya, Miss Gracie LOVES her stuffed animals. Each one has a name and she knows most of them by name...very impressive.

More importantly, though, very cute.

She continues to be healthy and sweet, sitting next to me on the couch as I blog today.

Happy Birthday Birdie's Mama

Once upon a time there was a friend who was born on this day ___ years ago. I will let her fill in that number because I do believe that at some point she started aging backwards. It was 1989 when we first met. I was a zany college junior who enjoyed smoking cigarettes and partying. (I've changed a lot in this regard because I haven't had a cigarette since 1993 and one or two drinks will do me in now).

This year, marks 20 years of incredible friendship filled with laughs, good talks, hanging out...sharing crazy cat lady stories...and more. I am very thankful, can you tell?

So, in honor of this day of Birdie's Mama's birth, I will tell you a little about three things I have learned from her:

The value of honesty - I remember one time I addressed an envelope to her with my zip code so it took a long time for it to get to her. Her response was "you dope, you put your own zip code." It was true, I was a little bit of a space cadet. I love that we can just be real with each other. Not a lot of pretense.
The value of hanging out - I love just being with her and her family. Just sitting around chatting or whatever. It's great. It's also great knitting time.
The value of acceptance - we just appreciate each other for who we are. We are pretty different in a lot of ways, but very similar in others. I love this.

Love you Birdie's Mama! Looking forward to continuing on this journey together. The photo was taken in Kalamazoo several years ago.

Doesn't she look pretty and all lab-like? poor thing had snow-related fur mats that were imPOSsible for even our groomer to work through...

She looks like a puppy and is feeling good so when she runs around she acts like a puppy too! It's been a year since all of the turmoil of her illness and though we have to be careful and continue to give her medications and supplements and special food and vitamin b-12 injections...she's holding her own.

We are grateful.

Tuesday: Rainy Rainy Tuesday

Thankfully, we have not gotten any water in our basement as of yet. The news had "team coverage" of the "Flash Flood Warning" last night, which always gets me a little edgy (the flash flood warning, not the team coverage, the team coverage just makes me giggle).

Days like today are generally a drag to face, but I have my cute rain boots with little pink and white umbrellas, and my matching pink rain jacket to take the edge off. Both items, purchased at different times, were on sale - which also makes me happy. I love to get a deal!

Another happy thing...little Tap Shoes, remember her? She started walking this week! And, gotta love modern technology because my brother sent me a video on my phone from his phone so I can watch it any time I want! It makes me smile. She's a real cutie. Such a mix of her mom and her dad...sometimes she looks and acts like MY dad which I've got to tell you is very eerie and reassuring at the same time.

A New Handle?

So, I've been contemplating a move...in the blogosphere...and a new name.

This is not surprising, I have this restlessness about me and find that staying with one name is boring (to me, about me...other people are just fine with the same name their whole lives - it makes sense and is far more predictable and organized).

So, this change actually would mean a number of changes

Changing the header on my blog
Maybe moving the blog and or changing the url some kind of way
And THAT would mean updating all the webrings
Changing my Ravelry name (this is how it all started)
Oh, and picking a name I can live with. Ha ha.

Any other changes, I'm not thinking of? It will likely help discourage me if it is too big an undertaking...which it is panning out to be.

What if I just change my header? And my Ravelry name. Hmm.

1. Putting a quarter in an expired meter (I didn't know the person parked there) was my last random act of kindness. note: Gee that was a while ago, I need to get back on this...

3. I am hopeless in finding logic in matters of the heart.

5. The poem I wrote for my sister at her wedding included how we have taken separate paths, but still remained connected. This is still true.

6. Our weather yesterday reminds me that there is hope that Spring will soon be upon us...the photo is from 2005.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to sleeping, tomorrow my plans include work, then baking a lasagna for some friends with a newborn and Sunday, I want to watch The Secret Life of Bees with Lehu!

How cute is this cat? I know she was featured last week too, but I cannot help it. She curls up every night on Lehu's lap, and during the day on a chair. I love the way she tucks her little head in.

This little lady is a petite feline for sure. She's only 7 lbs. Much lighter than Georgie's 11 or Ruthie's 14!

Georgie is such a cute boy. This little kitty has a heart condition, but also has intermittent seizure-like activity. It's very odd.

Yesterday he had a really long one and we had to give him some extra medication...which made him really groggy and then really hungry. This dude was stoned. We had to watch him because he was wobbling around the house trying to do what he does normally when he isn't on the sauce.

Forgive my crass sense of humor, if I don't laugh I'll cry.

So I carried him downstairs while I cleaned cat boxes and did laundry. He ate a ton of food. What a poor boy. When he finally came down, he started running after his feline sisters...

Stay tuned, we might need to schedule an intervention.

There's Been Knitting

Here is the February Lady in Red. I had to wait for the longer cord to come from Knit Picks (I'm using options needles -- LOVE them).

I have a ways to go, but so far I know she fits me. You might recall that I have in past overestimated my size and made garments that were too big for me and I ended up annoyed. Frogging the tomato was actually a relief because I knew I could make something better with the yarn (Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton in Tomato). I am, after all, a product knitter, rather than a process knitter.

I've also almost finished my Comfy Toddler Poncho which I will write up and put on Ravelry. Plan is to put a picot trim on the bottom edge (I don't really like fringe so much). The colors are a little off because there wasn't enough light for the photo, but you get the idea.

I've also been making little sewn projects...here is one of the eye pillows, which I think I might start selling on Etsy. Not sure yet.

So, no big deal...I started on an orange juice campaign and lo and behold got a lot of coupons for $1 off Florida's Natural OJ. I like this OJ, actually, it comes in NO PULP which makes me happy. I'm going to take advantage of these coupons. I generally get Tropicana, I'm not going to lie...but I'm going to try this stuff.

This is a knitting blog, sort of, but I haven't talked about knitting for a while. I am working on a February Lady Sweater...it is coming along nicely. I'm using the yarn that once was "The Tomato" which turned out wonky and too big.

I'm also working on a poncho for a cute little girl in Southern Illinois (no blog name yet, but she was born the exact same day as Birdie was), and the pattern (I'm making it up as I go along again) is easy so a cute little girl in Michigan (Birdie) might get one and a couple of other cute little girls in California too (nieces).

Saving the World, a different kind of Dogs on Thursday

Dad
September 15, 1941 - February 5, 2002

It is again February 5th. I didn't actually feel really sad today when I woke up. But I also want to honor my dad today. And, the inevitable waves of grief that I will feel as I remember that day seven years ago.

Dad (pictured above with Gulliver in 1976 or so) died seven years ago. Thoughts of him occupy so much of my mind so much of the time. I often feel embarrassed that I mention him as frequently as I do. As if by talking about him, I will be able to fill the emptiness that I feel in my heart without him.

It isn't as though we were really close or talked about a lot, but the potential was there. We were moving that direction and now that possibility is left hanging. Over the past seven years I've felt all kinds of things about this, and for the first two or three years I could not even remember him "well" because when he got sick he looked so different. It is a relief to be able to remember him as he was most of his life now. Old photos have me longing for those days, hoping to be able to get closer with him. Just have him hug me one more time and say "hey, bub, that's good stuff."

I tell my clients that grief isn't a predictable process, it just is. So, I've been working on accepting that for myself. Some days I just feel incredibly sad and other days I feel very glad that I got to say many of the things I needed to say, and he told me he was proud of me.

The day before he died, we were "discussing" his medication or something and I looked at him and just started to cry. He whispered that he loved me and that I can't change the world. Through my tears, I told him I wasn't going to stop trying.

So, today, I will be intentional about what I am doing to change my world. I will do nice things for myself because I can't change the world without starting with me.

Dogs on Thursday

I have been very inconsistent about Dogs on Thursday...and Whiskers on Wednesday for that matter. Frankly, I'm surprised those lovelies keep me on the blog roll!

Well, Gracie is doing well. We posted to her blog today (a little post). And for a change of pace, there is a photo of her dainty (ha ha) footprints.

How cool! Thanks to the Princess, who gave me this award with a very sweet description of this humble little blog. Thanks, girl! So so nice. The Princess' mama is a regular reader (and I try to read hers as regularly as I can)...Gaylen.

So, hmm. I tend to nominate the same people every time I do this...so I'm going to branch out a bit.

But first, I must nominate my friend in real life and on the magical interweb, Chicago Sarah. One day, I was turning left at a light (I really hate turning left) and I realized that I was not feeling at all anxious. I am so comfortable with Sarah, feels like we are family - only better because we have chosen each other as friends. Plus, she does cables and sews and we have really learned to get good at this knitting thing together. We are our knitting group :)

Brit Knitter is like a sister I've never met. We think about a lot of things in similar ways, and I love her sense of humor. I also really appreciate her support at a distance, it is so nice. Happy happy joy joy.

Yarn Demon makes some dang cute stitch markers. I love my little sheepy ones, though one fell and broke (the black sheep, of course). I actually have one of the little guys on my desk at work next to my little mini Caribou Coffee mug. So cute. She sells them in her etsy shop. Her kitty is not a fan of the camera which totally cracks me up because my cats are hams for the camera (not really, but whatever).

Robin from the Knittin' Coop is great. She is a fellow yogi, her cat Ace is a serious character and her little doggie Rudy is the cutest.

CactusNeedles is from Arizona, a place that I love (even more during the winter, I'm not gonna lie). Her dog Ella and our Miss Gracie (not to be confused with Our Miss Brooks, ha ha) are virtual dog park buds. And, this lady can knit hats and cables and all kinds of things. I am very wowed.

Gnat from Barknknit. Seriously, this girl has energy. She runs an Etsy Shop, has a pod cast, just got married (Cubs theme, people, Cubs!), and has a discussion group on Ravelry. If you don't know her...well, a word to the wise is sufficient.

And, Donna - KnittingGal - the photos on her blog are aways intriguing and she is lovely.

One more! Roe from More Coffee Please is my Facebook friend now too. It's so fun. She is a Sci Fi Fan (like Lehu) and a great gal who blogs about knitting and her boys and coffee and all sorts of things.
